Complete Forex Guide for Europe Travel from Ahmedabad — Euros, Budget & Tips
Europe is the dream destination for millions of Indians — and with good reason. The Eiffel Tower, the Amalfi Coast, the Swiss Alps, and Amsterdam's canals have beckoned travellers from Ahmedabad for decades. But Europe is also expensive if you're not smart about your forex. This guide will save you money and stress on your Europe trip from Ahmedabad.
Euro vs Other European Currencies
Not all of Europe uses the Euro. Before buying currency, confirm which countries on your itinerary use which currency:
| Country | Currency | Code |
|---|---|---|
| France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Netherlands | Euro | EUR |
| United Kingdom | British Pound | GBP |
| Switzerland | Swiss Franc | CHF |
| Norway, Sweden, Denmark | Norwegian/Swedish/Danish Krone | NOK/SEK/DKK |
| Czech Republic | Czech Koruna | CZK |
| Hungary | Hungarian Forint | HUF |
If your trip covers multiple currency zones, buy each currency separately before leaving India — it's cheaper than exchanging one currency for another at the destination.
EUR to INR — What Rate Should You Expect?
The Euro typically trades at ₹89–96 per EUR (varies with USD/INR since EUR/USD is closely correlated). At Currency Buzz, our spread on Euro is typically 1.5–2.0% above mid-market — far better than the 6–8% you'll pay at European airports. On a EUR 1,500 purchase, that difference means ₹6,000–8,000 saved by exchanging in Ahmedabad.
How Much Euro Cash to Carry?
| Trip Style | Daily Budget | 7 Days | 10 Days | 14 Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget backpacker | EUR 60–80/day | EUR 560 | EUR 800 | EUR 1,120 |
| Mid-range tourist | EUR 120–150/day | EUR 1,050 | EUR 1,500 | EUR 2,100 |
| Luxury | EUR 250+/day | EUR 1,750+ | EUR 2,500+ | EUR 3,500+ |
Western Europe (France, Switzerland, Italy) is significantly more expensive than Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland). Budget accordingly for your specific itinerary.
Cash vs Card in Europe
Europe is largely card-friendly — contactless payments are standard across France, Germany, and Benelux countries. However, carry cash for:
- Small cafes and bakeries in Italy (many still cash only, especially outside tourist centres)
- Public transport vending machines in some cities
- Market stalls and local artisans
- Tips (waiters strongly prefer cash tips throughout Europe)
- Smaller towns and villages where card machines are unreliable
- Paid public toilets (common across Germany, Austria, Switzerland)
We recommend the 60/40 rule for Europe: 60% of your travel budget as EUR cash (for all the places that don't take cards), and 40% on an international card. Buy your Euros at Currency Buzz, Gota, Ahmedabad 2-3 days before your flight.
Don't Forget Schengen Travel Insurance
If you need a Schengen visa to visit Europe (required for Indian passport holders), travel insurance with minimum €30,000 medical coverage is mandatory for your visa application. Your insurance dates must exactly match your travel dates. Currency Buzz offers Schengen-compliant travel insurance — get it together with your Euros at the same visit to our Gota branch. Country-Specific Forex Tips
- France — Card widely accepted everywhere including boulangeries and corner shops. Always have €50–100 cash minimum for markets, tipping, and street food.
- Italy — Cash is still king, especially in restaurants and smaller shops. Carry at least €200 cash at all times. Many trattorias don't accept cards for bills under €20.
- Germany — Surprisingly cash-heavy for a developed economy. Many restaurants, petrol stations, and shops don't take card. Carry more EUR than you'd think — at least €300.
- Switzerland — CHF needed (not EUR). Card works almost everywhere but CHF is expensive. Have CHF 100 minimum for incidentals.
- Netherlands (Amsterdam) — Very card-friendly. But carry €100 cash for Waterlooplein market and some traditional Dutch pancake houses.
- Spain — Card accepted widely, but carry €100 for tapas bars in old town areas and taxi tips.
Do NOT exchange money at CDG Paris, Frankfurt, Heathrow, or any European airport. Their rates can be 8–10% above mid-market. On a EUR 1,500 exchange, you'd pay ₹12,000–₹15,000 more than at Currency Buzz, Gota.
When to Buy Your Euros
Buy 5–7 days before your trip for the best combination of: time to compare, no last-minute pressure, and the ability to take advantage of any favorable rate movements. Avoid exchanging Euros on the day of your flight — you'll be rushed and may not get the best rate.
